Fast Facts About Gaming & Social Media

June 30th, 2010

Did you know that approximately half of gamers are female and the average age of a player in the US is actually 48 years old? Gaming is definitely not the same world it used to be! It’s not limited to PS3s or the Xbox anymore, many gamers have taken to growing their crops and building a family of crime on games like Farmville and Mafia Wars on sites like Facebook.

Facebook dominates as the top social gaming location with 83% of weekly gamers playing on the site according to eMarketer, and by 2012 social gamers will represent approximately 40% of social users – up from 30% reported in 2009. So how can companies use this to their advantage? Just over half of the gamers questioned said that they actually noticed branding in their virtual games – such as through sweepstakes, offers and surveys.

An estimated 47 million people played social games in the US in 2009 – that number is projected to increase to 79 million by 2012 (ThinkEquity LLC, 2010) . It’s not something that you should ignore and figure is for kids only. With the average age of a US player being 48, social gaming is something to take serious. Gaming definitely has a hold on us.

The Future of Twitter + Stats For The Average User

April 28th, 2010

Here’s a couple stats for the average Twitter user:

  • An active Twitter user has at least 10 followers
  • An active Twitter user follows at least 10 users
  • An active Twitter user has tweeted at least 10 times
  • Only 26% of Twitter users have 10 followers or more
  • 51% of Twitter users are following less than 5 people
  • 34% of Twitter users have never tweeted

These stats come from a study done by the security firm Barracuda Labs. The study examined 19 million Twitter accounts with the goal of figuring out how people were using Twitter. Upon first glance at some of these you may determine that Twitter users aren’t very active. Keep in mind that Twitter has over 105 million users now, and while the results from this study would imply that only 21% of Twitter users are active – that’s still a sizable chunk!

These numbers have actually improved since last summer showing that Twitter has had notable growth. Twitter exploded in early 2009, and then drastically slowed by down in the following months.

The goal and the hope for Twitter in moving forward is that we will see a more active users on Twitter as well as more diverse users and less spam. We’ve all seen the mass marketers promising 50,000+ followers in the next 24 hours – and we’d all like to see those users leave Twitter. While we won’t ever be able to truly eliminate all the inactive users or the spammers from social sites – Twitter has been working hard on these fronts. The site already has claimed that they’ve reduced spam to 1% of Tweets. Which is incredibly impressive considering that 90% of email is spam. While Twitter didn’t go into detail on how it has accomplished this, it did mention that users have the ability to report spam with the “report for spam” link on profiles that exhibit this type of behavior, and Twitter continues to encourage users to use this method for reporting spam.
